What is HaNthx-1?

An Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation Device, suitable for installation at home, toilet, cupboard, etc to disinfect masks, clothes, mobile phones, gloves etc.

A powerful UVC lamp can work on disinfecting beds, sofas, carpet & medium sized rooms. It has also been proven effective to remove bad odour from long usage of masks and clothes.

  • How does it work?

    The working principle here is the light source needs to be held at various positions, exposing towards tables, doors, and chairs. UVC follows the inverse square law which results in less intensity; the farther it is from the light source.

    • 2 meters away would emit 1/4 (25%) of the original intensity that was at 1m.

    • 3 meters away would receive 1/9 (11%).

    • To cover a room multiple positions and increased duration will be required.

  • But why UV Sterilization?

    In this living era with COVID-19 pandemic, there is a global interest in disinfecting surfaces. As society starts to safely reopen commercial spaces, transportation sectors and education houses, it requires large-scale cleaning solutions.

    Most solutions are electrostatic sprayers, fogging machines, and manual wiping. This requires a large supply chain of chemicals and disposable products.

    HaNthx-1 is here to resolve the biggest problem in current situation which doesn’t seem to go away for a while at least. It is convenient to use and no chemicals are required.

    This leaves us with no chemical residue and is able to kill all kinds of microorganisms, including drug-resistant bacteria, fungi, viruses and spores.

  • Design Principal

    It has a major limit! UV only works in its light path and can be blocked by objects. Make sure that the object you want to sanitize, is kept directly in line with the UV light. We have resolved this issue by using multiple UV bulbs to generate UV irradiation from different angles.

  • How to use?

    It takes between 10 and 15 minutes to disinfect a medium sized room. By positioning it in various areas for approximately 1 or 2 minutes around the room to maximize its disinfecting properties.

    The robot’s UV array emits 40 joules per square meter per second (at a 1-meter distance) of 254-nano-meter light, which will utterly wreck 99.99 percent of germs in just a few minutes without the device having to do anything more complicated than just placed there.

    A person just has to remotely control the device through his mobile to turn ON the UV light.

  • Benefits, Safety & Mandatory Precautionary Measures

    1. Design limitation - UV only works in its light path and can be blocked by objects. Make sure that the object you want to sterilize, is kept directly in line with the UV light. We have minimized this issue by using multiple UV bulbs to generate UV irradiation from different angles.

    2. Delayed Timer - To avoid human irradiation with UVC, a delayed timer has been added. It can be set from 10 sec- 1min. The operator can switch on UVC Tower with pre-defined timer settings and can comfortably move out of the operator. E.g. You set 15-sec delay onset and switch on the unit. Move out of the operator and UVC Tower will switch on only after 15 sec pre-set delay giving enough time to move out of the operator.

    3. Pre-set timing option - While some of the bacteria, fungi may take several minutes to get inactivated, corona viruses take about 2- 3 minutes. Now, this is one of the major advantages over other methods especially while disinfecting the operator between 2 patients as one can start with the next patient within minutes saving vital clinical time!

    4. Portable and lightweight - Since UV C Tower is light weight, it can be moved to different corners of the room. A single unit can be used between multiple operators, passage, waiting-reception area, consultation area disinfection. There are numerous studies which show that UV C can be very effectively used to sterilize PPE including N 95 masks for reuse.

What is Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI)?

UVGI is a method of disinfection that uses short-wavelength ultraviolet light (UV-C) to inactivate or kill microorganisms and pathogens. Essentially, UVGI is the use of UV light with sufficiently short wavelengths to disinfect surfaces, air, and water. UVGI has been recommended or used by the United States Army, the CDC, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) , WHO, our very own DRDO and Institute of Virology, Pune, most of the laboratories use UV C radiation commonly to kill the microbes effectively. Our home water purifiers commonly use UVC lights.

UV light with wavelengths less than 290nm are considered to have “germicidal” properties. Earth’s atmosphere absorbs ultra magnetic radiation with wavelengths less than 290nm, meaning that most of the UV-C and UV-B generated by the sun is blocked by our planet’s ozone. The distinction should be made between the biological effect and the penetration depth of UV radiation, a key concept in UVGI safety.

Eye: The cornea absorbs almost all ultraviolet radiation below 295 nm. This includes all UVC and most UVB light. The natural crystalline lens absorbs most light near UVB (300–315 nm) and all UVA light.

Skin: UV-C wavelengths are the most biologically active radiation and, ironically, much less dangerous to humans. This is because UV-C radiation is absorbed by the outer dead layer of human skin, while UV-B and UV-A radiation penetrate deeper. While attention to UVGI safety is important, because ‘overexposure’ to 254 nm i.e. UVC radiation can readily cause erythema (“sunburn”) to the skin and photo keratitis (“welder's flash”) to the eyes, the long-term health risks are considered to be negligible compared with common solar UV exposures which has UVA and UVB.

Therefore it is strongly advocated to move out of the area of artificial UVC irradiation sources like tube lights, lamps etc. There should not be any direct exposure to the light. Reflected light usually loses majority of UVC and consists of visible light mainly, hence safer. Any device that takes care of this problem by adding a variable delay timer can be of great help. You can set 1 to 90-second delay depending upon time needed for you to vacate the room.

The effectiveness of germicidal UV light depends on the length of time a microorganism is exposed to UV, as well as the intensity and wavelength of the UV radiation source (lamp).

It depends upon what watt of light it is. If it is a very weak light, then it can be ok. But such 36-watt tube lights, no ways! It will fade all furniture, the mica will start coming out of plywood. All equipment will start losing colour. Plastics will lose life.

The time spans required to kill various bacteria, fungi, spores and viruses are different. Usually, 15 min is more than enough in a 12 x 12 feet operatory to kill/ inactivate all forms of micro life with 72 watt light. While some bacteria, spores, fungi take longer to inactivate, for most of the corona viruses, 3 min UV-C exposure is enough in 12x12 feet room

UVC is very high energy light with a shorter wavelength, however, it loses it’s energy faster than UVA and UVB. That's how it does not even reach the earth surface. Most of it is filtered out by the Ozone layer.

Accidental look at the light from few feet distance is ok. You don't stare at it for long. If at all, conjunctivitis is the complication. Eye lens does not let UVC penetrate easily. So accidental glare is ok. Again, distance is an important factor.

Human occupancy of a room normally generates higher concentrations of dust. This dust is mainly made of human dead skin and hair (80%), which consist of keratin and cysteine molecules. When you run UV-C in the room for a few minutes, high energy UV-C photons break-up these molecules into thiol molecules which have a very low smell threshold. The human nose can detect thiols at concentrations as low as 1 part per billion. Some of the resulting broken pieces of molecules of skin and hair in the dust following intense UV photon bombardment will have sulfur-containing thiols leading to the unpleasant pungent smell of burning hair or flesh. The resulting potential concentrations of thiol molecules are negligible as compared to the published acceptable exposure limits; it is safe to enter a room after germicidal UV disinfection has been performed.

UVC can degenerate polypropylene masks or PPEs. However, this takes time and long exposure. Research shows we can irradiate and reuse PPE about 4 times with UV light safely before we discard.

In short, UVGI is a specific method of sterilization that uses UV lighting. In essence, UV lighting is a component of UVGI. UVGI is just one method of sterilization/decontamination using lighting, though, so we like to refer to is as UV disinfection lighting to encompass more than just the one UVGI method. When we say UV disinfection lighting, we mean any UV lighting that can be used in many applications to kill germs.

UVC light loses it’s germicidal energy as it falls on glass or transparent plastic casing. For the same reason, many devices have no glass protection! If there is a glass cover, the device loses its purpose. The UVC Tubes must not be covered with anything.

The most efficient source for generating UVC is the low-pressure mercury discharge lamp, where on average 35% of input watts is converted to UVC watts. The radiation is generated almost exclusively at 254 nm. UVC light does not pass through glass. It loses its energy as it hits the glass surface. It is visible violet-blue light which passes through the glass. Don’t worry. You are safe!
